Cabi has more than 3,500 stylists selling personalised services to clients, has become one of the world’s biggest direct-selling companies. Cabi, which stands for “Carol Anderson By Invitation”, after its original designer, was bought by private equity firm Sentinel in 2017 and had US sales of more than $255m (£193m) in 2018.

The business was founded in 2002 by 11 female friends aged 30 to 50, who felt that they had become “disconnected” from shopping in stores. “Everything was based on what was popular the year before. We would be served by someone who didn’t know us or understand us,” said Kimberly Inskeep, one of the founders and Cabi’s president. “We wanted to be a business by women, for women.”

The founders set out to solve two problems: women needed a better way to shop and a better way to work. The business has become known for its alternative shopping experience where women can build a wardrobe and discover their personal style with the help of a Cabi Stylist, without ever having to deal with the frustrations of traditional shopping. They can skip the time-consuming trips to the shopping mall, the lack of service found in stores, and the overwhelming number of choices offered through online shopping.
